OUR STORY
OUR TRADITION
Before the current version of the Syracuse Orange women’s rugby club, Syracuse had grassroots beginnings with a women’s team in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It consisted of both Syracuse and ESF students , wives of SU men’s rugby players as well as Syracuse residents. During this time, there was a broader national movement for increased women’s participation in collegiate sports after the passage of Title IX in 1972.
Over the next 40 years, SUWRC achieved remarkable success, capturing Conference Championships, NRU Championships, and D1 State Championships. The team has produced several USA Eagles and Women’s Premier League players, and established a robust alumni association of hundreds of women who continue to support current and former SU students.
Today, SUWRC is highly ranked in the nation for National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) D2 15s, the top 15 in NCR D2 7s, and were the 2023 and 2024 Upstate New York Collegiate Rugby Conference champions.
Our fall season runs from August to November, while our spring season extends from February to April.
We remain committed to upholding SUWRC traditions by playing for each other and honoring those who came before us.
